Boot Time of AKD / AKD2G | 27 Aug 2019 | |

Boot Time of AKD / AKD2G

The boot time was measured from the point of applying 24V control power to the drives.  The time was measured to specific indicators and functions of the drives.

Note that AC power was already turned on prior to running these tests, so that the drives could automatically enable.  Normally, AC power would be applied after the drives are booted up, and the enable signal would be applied after the drives are “Ready to Operate.”  (See the timing diagrams in the installation manuals.)  But for the sake of taking time measurements without the use of a PLC or control relays, the drives needed to automatically enable after booting up.

Network Topology

This test was performed using a simple local network with only a laptop, an Ethernet switch, and the drive.

The following time measurements are based on this specific setup, and the delay times could change drastically on a different network.  For DHCP, the laptop is responsible for a lot of the time delay.  If DHCP were used on a machine network with a PLC or a corporate network with a server, the time delays could be shorter.

Notes

  • It makes no difference whether the feedback is manually configured or set to Auto Identify.
  • It makes no difference whether the motor is manually configured or set to Autoset.
  • The tests with AKD drives used an AKM motor with SFD feedback.  The tests with the AKD2G used an AKM motor with SFD3 feedback.
  • The only significant difference is the time for Workbench to see the drive on the network, depending on whether the drive is using Static IP or DHCP.
  • It takes about 3 seconds for Workbench to connect to the drive after clicking the Connect button.  If it doesn’t connect in that time, it will not connect (something is wrong).
