General

PROFIBUS (Process Field Bus) is a standard for fieldbus communication in the automatization technology. PROFIBUS is the only fieldbus, that can be used both in the production automation and in the process automation.

PROFIBUS-DP (decentralised periphery) to the control of sensors and actors by a central control in the industrial engineering. Most important here are the various standard diagnosis features. Data rates up to 12 MBit/sec with twisted two-wire lines.

For the electrical assignment two different cable types are specified (type A and type B). The most well-known cable is the purple cable of the type A. The colour specification is a reference to the non-intrinsically safe cable coat, intrinsically safe cables shall show a blue cable coat of the type A.

Standardization

PROFIBUS has been defined 1991/1993 in DIN 19245, has been transferred in 1996 to the EN 50170 and is fixed in IEC 61158 / IEC 61784 since 1999.

Organisation

Since 1989 the Profibus Nutzerorganisation e.V (PNO), where manufacturers and users are organized, exists in Germany. Kollmorgen is a member of this organization.
