How to Configure an AKD Drive with a Single Ended Incremental Encoder as the Primary Feedback Device
The following explains the wiring of the AKD drive for use with a single ended incremental encoder. This is not normally recommended as a feedback configuration to be used with an AKD drive. The single ended incremental encoder does not provide noise immunity and could cause the system to operate erratically. For noise immunity purposes, Kollmorgen recommends using a differential incremental encoder as the Primary feedback device.
However, for a single ended encoder, it is required to bias the compliment channels. This method of biasing the encoder’s compliment input channels with +2.5 volts is so the AKD drive can detect the encoder input channels changing state. Using 250 ohm biasing resistors will normally work, but the resistor may require adjustment depending on the feedback cable length.
Wiring Configuration:

This method also works for secondary feedback (Feedback 2) on the X9 connector.
