When investing in a driverless system, the first and most important question is: “What specific problem are we aiming to solve at this site?” At Kollmorgen – Autonomous Mobile Solutions (AMS), we believe that automation should never be a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, it should be a strategic response to real-world intralogistics challenges.
Localization Adapted to Your Needs – Not the Other Way Around
With over 50 years of experience in the automated guided vehicle (AGV) and autonomous mobile robot (AMR) industry, we are well aware of the challenges that can appear on site. Warehouses evolve. Layouts shift. Pathways change. That is why Kollmorgen continuously evaluates new technology and supports a broad range of localization solutions, meeting the demands of both predictable operations and dynamic environments:
- Natural feature localization with 3D lidar – Uses existing infrastructure and scans in multiple planes, capturing depth and producing a 3D point cloud. Suitable for dynamic environments.
- Natural feature localization with 2D lidar – Uses existing infrastructure and scans in a single plane, detecting obstacles and producing a map of the surroundings. Suitable for applications requiring high accuracy.
- Reflector-based localization – Proven precision in structured settings, using reflectors for localization. Suitable for systems requiring top accuracy and optimal throughput.
- Magnetic Tape or Spot-Based Localization – A reliable solution in fixed-path applications, where a simple but effective automation solution is requested.

Introducing Support for Vision-Based Localization
Vision-based localization uses cameras and image processing to determine a vehicle’s position, enabling localization without relying solely on GPS or physical markers, making it suitable for dynamic environments with minimal infrastructure. Beyond localization, the camera system can classify objects using visual input and adjust the vehicle’s path—for example, when a pallet is skewed—enhancing both flexibility and operational efficiency.
