Questions & Answers

The below represents frequent questions our support, engineering and sales teams have been asked over the years. If you have a question, please submit our contact us form to reach our application engineering team.

Searching through KDN

Search is built into the core of KDN; every major page has the search function at or near the top of the page. When you start typing, KDN will automatically show you suggested searches, based on your entry.

Search results are based on the article title, tags that have been applied to the article, and by text in the article. For example, searching for "servo" will return many hundreds of results.

To help you find what you really need, filters may be applied to search results. The left side of the results page includes three filter categories: Content Type, Tags, and Post Date. Selecting any of these will help refine the results.

Voting on Answers

Users have the ability to vote on Answers to Questions. If you see an answer which you believe answers a question accurately or has good information, yuo are encouraged to vote on the Answer. Additionally, the user who asked the Question can select the "Best Answer". If a Kollmorgen Support representative answers a Question, that answer will automatically be designated as "Best".

Voting on answers not only helps spread good information, it helps other users. When an answer is voted up (+), the user gets some points, voting an answer down (-) reduces points. Points may be used for numerous things including raning users. A user who has a lot of points probably usually provides good information.

What does index d mean in MTTFd?

The designation "d" means "dangerous". MTTFd describes the time up to the first dangerous failure.

What do I have to consider when using a residual current protective device (RCD) in a servo system?
What can I do if the manufacturer of my component does not deliver safety characteristic values?

Standards EN ISO 13849-1 and EN 62061 show reference values for often used components in the appendix. If you have manufacturer values, you must use these values instead of the reference values.

Must application software be certified, and according to which standard?

No. A duty for certification does not exist according to EN 13849 and EN 62061. But, according to appendix IV of the machine directive, there might be a duty to certify, e.g. for presses. Requirements for programming of software can be found in EN 62061 and EN ISO 13849-1.

Is motor operation without feedback possible with a safety card?

No, sensorless operation with safety card functions is not possible with either synchronous or asynchronous (induction) motors.

Is it possible to reach the hardware fault tolerance 1 with only one safety door contact?

No, because one single error only would force the break down of the safety circuit.

I am using a low velocity but a current evaluation of the safety card monitors an error.

When using a low velocity, current evaluations of the safety card in SLS (Safe Limited Speed) mode can still monitor an error. To resolve this set the ASCII parameter CSENID to 1. This increases resolution for low velocity values.

Can I use EN 13849-1 with integration of complex, programmable electronics?

Yes. With operating system software and safety functions to PL "e" the requirements according to IEC 61508-3 must be observed.

Which companies offer fibre optic cables for SERCOS?

Lapp and Honeywell are two such companies.

When starting the Upgrade Tool USB-CAN Dongle the error message ILLHW appears.

The latest Windows operating systems (´WINDOWS Vista, 7, 8) do not support the standard USB CAN-Dongle DLL file. If the error message ILLHW (illegal hardware) appears, then, after installation, replace the file "PCAN_USB.dll" in the install folder "C:\Programs\Drive Download Utility–USB\" with the separate file "PCAN_USB.dll" from the downloaded PCAN_USB.zip archive using the Downloads tool.

Can S300, S400, S600, and S700 be combined in one SERCOS ring?

Yes, without restrictions.

Which firmware version is required for BISS feedback evaluation?

S300/S700: from 3.00
S400/S600: from 6.68 (not 7.xx)

What is the resolution used to evaluate a Resolver?

14 bits. The theoretic resolution in the position loop is 20 bits.

What is the resolution of the SIN-COS tracks with EnDat encoders?

11 bits. These are 2 bits for signal quadrupling and 8 bits signal resolution plus 1 bit sign. The signals have an internal resolution of 12 bits but operated with 8 bits.

What is the accuracy of BiSS encoders?

The BiSS encoder nominally has an accuracy of +/- 35 angle seconds. In the laboratory +/- 20 angle seconds have been measured.
A comparable Heidenhain encoder has nominal +/- 60 angle seconds accuracy.

Is it possible to use motors with a feedback system without commutation information as a primary feedback?

Yes. A Wake and Shake function determines the absolute position of the permanent magnets in relationship to the stator windings. See page Wake and Shake.

Is SFD3 compatible with the S200 drive?

No. With the S200 drive, SFD3 is not compatable. SFD must be used with S200.

How can an external zero pulse via X1 data input with SinCos encoders can be detected?

The external zero pulse can be detected with the macro command "M NIZFLAG".
(send "M NIZFLAG 0" first to delete the existing value!)
