Retailers and consumers hardly think about cartons. It’s the product inside that counts. But without the carton, the entire distribution and merchandising process couldn’t even exist. And there’s nothing simple about creating and packing perfect cartons. Sophisticated motion is the key, and that calls for sophisticated motion solutions from Kollmorgen.

Inside the Box

Cartoning applications require perfect coordination of multiple flows, and can involve widely different types of material, carton designs, product sizes and shapes, and sealing methods. The carton itself needs to be formed from a flat shape to a 3D box or tray, with complex tucking and fastening processes. The product needs to be placed in the carton using, for example, a pick-and-place system or a robotic delta picker. And the carton needs to be securely sealed, then loaded into a separately formed case carton.

Outside the Box

Often, cartoning processes need to be coordinated with blister packing, laminating, wrapping and other processes, along with the infeed, sorting, conveying and other systems the operation requires. Orchestrating all these processes requires precise positioning within and across each process, often at high speeds. Kollmorgen servo systems provide the torque, precision and simple optimization needed to keep cartoning and related processes moving efficiently and in perfect synch.

Kollmorgen Offers the Complete Package

Fast, reliable production is just the beginning. Faster adjustments and changeovers, less maintenance, optimizable performance and simpler, more efficient electromechanics can all make a huge difference in a machine’s marketability. Kollmorgen’s co-engineering expertise, together with innovative, integrated motion solutions such as our frameless motors and decentralized drives, are helping OEMs build cartoning machines that are smaller, safer, more adaptable and more efficient. And they’re helping packaging customers build and fill better cartons, faster, with minimal downtime and waste.
