Mounted on the top of an armored vehicle, the actuator that controls the azimuth and elevation of a weapon station must survive the same conditions of weather, temperature, dust, vibration and shock as the vehicle itself. At the same time, it must be lightweight and low-profile to maintain vehicle weight limits and to keep vehicle clearance and center of gravity as low as possible. Above all, it must ensure reliably accurate positioning to engage moving targets, even as the vehicle itself is in motion.
Extreme Torque Density, Absolute Precision
For accurate targeting in highly dynamic conditions, actuators must continuously make precise adjustments—sometimes small, sometimes large—in response to input from the control system. Each adjustment requires a compact, light servo motor to accelerate the relatively large mass of the weapon and its mounting system. The multi-axis torque and speed requirements are extreme—a perfect application for the industry-leading torque density of Kollmorgen direct drive servo technologies.
Robust, Impervious Construction for Reliable Operation
Survivability is just as important as accuracy. The positioning system needs to work exactly as specified, no matter what conditions are encountered in the field. With our unique co-engineering capabilities, we can modify standard products or create fully custom designs that incorporate corrosion-free materials, impervious seals and rugged construction to survive the harshest conditions, year after year.
Defense Expertise and a Dependable Supply
Kollmorgen has many decades of experience supplying motion components designed for 100 percent reliability in the most demanding defense applications. We continue to innovate to meet the increasingly demanding requirements of today’s and tomorrow’s battlefield. With our global engineering expertise, manufacturing facilities and capabilities, we’re ready to deliver the standard and customized motion components you need for any weapon system, anywhere in the world.
