Motion long considered a mainstay of induction motors, encroachment in the area of 50 hp and greater have been seen recently for some applications by permanent magnet (PM) servomotors.  These applications usually have dynamic considerations that require position-time closed loop and high accelerations.  When accelerating large loads, permanent magnet servomotors can work with very high load to motor inertia ratios and still maintain performance requirements.
