Operating DC Motors (S300, S700)

Valid for S300, S700

General

Standard DC motors and Voice Coil Motors can be controlled by S300 and S700. The servo amplifiers require some parameter adjustments and special wiring to run these motors.

Feedback

Usually dc motors have a tacho feedback, which delivers a dc signal (+/- 10V or similar). This signal can be evaluated with an anolog input of the servo amplifier. When using an analog speed set point with the second analog input, both inputs can be added (ASCII command ANCNFG 4).

Voice Coil Motors can be operated with all feedback systems, which can be read by the servo amplifier.

Standard servomotors have an internal temperature sensor, which is evaluated by the S300/S700 drives via the feedback cable. Because with dc motors no standard feedback cable is connected, the temperature sensor inputs on the servo amplifier connector must be jumpered.

Power

A dc motor has only two winding terminal connections and not three as an ordinary brushless servo-motor. Because of this the output terminal (phase U2) of the motor terminal connection X9 is deactivated by the software. As long as the motor in the Drive GUI is set for DC/VoiceCoil (MTYPE 4), no three-phase motor can be connected to the servo controller. This should be marked on the connector plug or on the drive to avoid a faulty operation.

  1. Completely remove all connections to connector X9.
  2. Set motor type DC/VoiceCoil MTYPE 4 (in the terminal screen)
  3. SAVE and COLDSTART
  4. Connect dc motor at the terminals V2 "+" and W2"-" to X9
  5. Block or mark terminal U2 on connector X9
  6. The motor holding brake can be used as usual
  7. The brake circuit can be used as usual
  8. Adjust current limits (for motors and current controllers)
  9. OPMODE 2
  10. Switch on mains voltage
  11. Enable
  12. Force a current of 10% MICONT by sending the command (T (10% MICONT))
  13. Result in GUI monitor or scope page: IQ current~ 10% MICONT; ID current ~ 0
    Attention !
If ID current is considerably different from 0 (≥0.1A), the terminal X9 must be checked for correct connections.
  14. Adjust rest of setup parameters as usual.

All filter functions work also with DC motors.
