Visit Kollmorgen at interpack 2011 to Learn how Optimized Motion Maximizes Packaging Machine Efficiency
RADFORD, VA – May 12, 2011 –Kollmorgen is exhibiting its motion control technology and co-engineering expertise at interpack 2011 from May 12 -18 in Düsseldorf, Germany in Hall 08a, Stand C14. Live demos will be featured that illustrate the exemplary performance that is attainable in real packaging applications and how customers were able to realize clear competitive advantages through differentiated motion control solutions. Some of the most considerable improvements were achieved in throughput, productivity and machine availability, material and maintenance costs, and energy consumption.
A special highlight at the Kollmorgen exhibit is a new series of KBM frameless, brushless torque motors that are ideal for sophisticated, high-performance and space-restricted applications typically found in the packaging sector. Compared with other direct drive motor solutions, the KBM series is unique due to its first-class power density and multiplicity of standard build components. These attributes enable OEMs to quickly and cost effectively develop differentiated motor and machine solutions that are tailored perfectly to market and customer requirements, using the modular design principle. Furthermore, KBM solutions score with the general advantages of direct drive motors compared with conventional motor and motor-transmission solutions, including greater precision, durability, dynamics and compactness.
Kollmorgen is also exhibiting two typical packaging applications developed using Kollmorgen Automation Suite™, where customers can increase machine productivity by 25 percent, with 25 percent less programming effort. Kollmorgen Automation Suite is a complete machine automation solution that simplifies the design and maximizes the efficiency of high performance multi-axes applications. Its Pipe Network™ graphic programming environment empowers designers to develop better quality machine solutions faster. The visual user interface with virtual master and drag-and-drop symbols for machine functions illustrates the architecture and the relationships between the various axes of a system. The ability to run virtual simulations eliminates the need for expensive test runs with the machine. Highly developed controls and control circuits that permit operation with greater bandwidths and more throughput, complete the automation solution.
Visitors to the Kollmorgen exhibit in Hall 08a, Stand C14 can also see an actual packaging machine solution based on Kollmorgen’s patented Cartridge Direct Drive Rotary™ (DDR) motors. By using Cartridge DDR instead of a transmission solution, typical machine availability can be increased by 20 percent and throughput by 30 percent. At the same time, machines with Cartridge DDR motion solutions realize an average reduction in service costs of 20 percent, along with a 40 percent decrease in the number of build components. The basis for achieving such improvements is the omission of transmission and control belts, coupled with a servo system with expanded bandwidth.
A live demo of Kollmorgen’s AKM™ washdown series servo motors in action is also available. This new standard solution for food and pharmaceutical packaging applications enables customers to profit not only from an extraordinarily high performance density and flexibility, but also from 30 percent lower materials costs and 20 percent lower maintenance and commissioning costs. Additionally, the life span of the motor is three times longer than that of comparable washdown-grade motors. These benefits are the result of an innovative coating - well proven and time tested in other applications - that eliminates the need for an expensive, heavy, stainless steel enclosure or additional enclosures, without compromising on hygiene requirements.
Kollmorgen is also demonstrating the performance differences between its AKM synchronous servo motor and an asynchronous motor. Thanks to integrated permanent magnets, considerably smaller mass inertia, and precise, energy and space saving configurability, the AKM solution consumes 30 percent less energy; a differential that is further improved when the AKM is paired with Kollmorgen’s AKD™ servo drive. The AKD features stored motor data and refined control algorithms to further optimize the energy demand. Assuming an electricity price of 15 cents per KWh and a machine life span of eight years, the savings – compared with a solution with asynchronous motor without regulator – can amount to $3744 per axes.
It is important to note that as of June 16, 2011, asynchronous motors in the new IE 1 efficiency class, with a performance range of 0.75 kW to 375 kW, will no longer be permitted in the EU market.
Lastly, Kollmorgen is also demonstrating a bottle filling application where new KBM series frameless, brushless motors are used.KBM series motors are particularly attractive in bottle filling applications thanks to their compact design, very even, precise and secure movements, easy installation and the number of available product variants that enable users to achieve the precise performance demanded of the application. KBM models are available in 14 sizes for low and high voltage operation, and offer many different torques, performances and speeds in a cost-effective, compact build group. Thanks to the variety of available solutions, machine builders have access to motors that meet the unique performance and dimensional requirements of their specific applications without the high costs associated with adapting and procuring special solutions.
