Ratingen, 17 November 2011 –Kollmorgen introduces KBM™ series brushless torque motors with no housing, ideal for demanding and space-restriced high-performance applications. The KBM solution enables machine builders and users to benefit from higher machine throughput, lower noise generation and longer life, while delivering the reliability and flexibility required to be competitive on the market. Perfectly customized motion solutions can be quickly and cost-effectively developed with KBM motors thanks to the wide selection in terms of size, performance and design features. As hollow-shaft direct drive motors with extraordinarily high power density, they also enable particularly compact machine solutions.

Because KBM motors attach directly to the machine bearing load they provide the benefits of a rotational direct drive motor, including increased machine throughput and reduced noise, by omitting components such as gears and tooth belts that are common to conventional mechanical transmissions. In addition, this configuration reduces maintenance and repair costs and machine downtime, with increased machine lifetime. The efficiency of KBM motors is at least 10% higher than that of mechanical solutions such as motor gears and tooth-belt systems. The series accomodates inertia ratios between the rotor and the load, and delivers outstanding acceleration and deceleration to contribute to maximum throughput.

Compared with other direct motor solutions, the KBM series stands out with a unique range of standard components and different designs. With their modular design, KBM motors enable machine builders to quickly and cost-effectively design high-performance solutions . With 14 sizes, 7 lengths, more than 150 pre-assembled motor windings plus numerous options, machine designers are freed from constrictive specifications making it possible to build machines that are optimally tailored to specific requirements. In order to further optimize application performance, an external air or water cooling system can be installed to increase the motor’s available continuous torque. The high number of standardized design options available with KBM motors eliminates the time and expense associated with additional adjustments or component procurements, while enabling OEMs to get their machine to market faster.

With their optimum performance values in the most confined of spaces, along with controlled, high overload capacity, KBM motors are an ideal solution - - for machines where maximum compactness, coupled with precision, reliability, performance and dynamics, are required. Through maximum efficiency and higher precision, KBM motors can pay for themselves more quickly than many other solutions available today.

KBM series motors leverage composite magnets that provide continuous torque of 1.45 to 3,445 Nm along with a peak torque of 4.91 to 12,812 Nm. In addition, these motors satisfy the EU Directive, and the materials used correspond with the UL recommendation and are RoHS-compatible. This makes it simpler for machine builders to obtain certification of higher-level assemblies into which the KBM motors are integrated.

KBM frameless brushless motors are available in standard sizes of 60 to 825 mm diameter, and for 240 or 480-Volt AC. Each overall size is available in three or four different lengths. Rotor hub dimensions can also be adjusted for individual customers within certain limits.
