Kollmorgen at the SPS/IPC/Drives 2011 Motion Control Solutions with Measureable Benefits

Ratingen, 15 November 2011 – In addition to exhibiting its motion-control technology skills, Kollmorgen is introducing a whole range of new solutions at SPS/IPC/Drives 2011 (22 to 24 November 2011, Nuremberg trade fair). The innovations on display in Hall 1 booth no. 1-550 will include the new AKD™ PDMM (Programmable Drive Multi-Axis Master), a servo amplifier with integrated, highperformance PLC and motion-control functionality. Also displayed will be the new KBM™ series of frameless brushless torque motors for demanding high-performance applications in a confined space, the Kollmorgen ESM energy-saving module, and the AKM1 matchbox-sized synchronous servo motor with standstill brake and absolute encoder. Each solution helps machine engineers and users achieve significant productivity and availability improvements, with reduced material and maintenance costs and energy consumption, all of which provide important competitive benefits.

AKD PDMM servo amplifiers enable machine builders to design multi-axis machines with 20% fewer components and 30% less space requirements. Machines that utilize AKD PDMM are more flexible, accurate and productive, and can be customized for different applications with particular speed requirements. This is made possible by the Kollmorgen Automation Suite™ development platform integrated in the drives. This gives the servo amplifiers a high-performance SPS and motion-control functionality, and enables them to be programmed very quickly and simply via the established graphic Pipe Network programming environment. Additionally, the five standardized IEC 61131 SPS languages are available, with PLCopen motion-control function modules for motion control. Each AKD PDMM can coordinate up to eight axes with standard AKD in 250 μs. As a result, interfaces and numerous expensive components can be eliminated, reducing overall system costs.

KBM is a new series of frameless brushless torque motors that are designed for demanding highperformance applications in a confined space - typical for the packaging sector, amongst others. KBM servo motors satisfy the need of machine engineers and users to build and use machines with higher throughput, lower noise generation and longer operating life. These motors also deliver the reliability and flexibility required to be competitive in today’s market. With KBM motors, perfectly customized motion solutions can be quickly and cost-effectively developed thanks to the wide selection of size, performance and design features. KBM hollow-shaft direct drive motors provide extraordinarily high power density to enable particularly compact machine solutions.

With the Energy Saving Module (ESM), Kollmorgen provides a capacitor module that, in combination with the servo-amplifier, can store energy when decelerating and subsequently use it for acceleration. As a result, machines that leverage the ESM consume less energy and operate more reliably in regions or company networks that suffer from irregular power supplies. The new solution also allows all axes to be driven in a defined preferred position in the event of a network failure, eliminating accidents and expensive repairs. The ESM can reduce overall operating costs, with a corresponding rise in safety, productivity and manufacturing quality, enabling machine engineers and users to improve their competitive position.

A final highlight at SPS/IPC/Drives is the latest addition to the AKM™ servo motor family, the AKM1. With flange dimensions of 40 mm, AKM1 is equipped with a standstill brake and is available with a number of different feedback systems and absolute encoders. AKM1 is the most compact synchronous servo motor in its performance class, and reliably stops proper motions in an axis - for instance with vertical axis alignments - and makes reference runs unnecessary upon start-up. AKM1 also minimizes control effort while increasing productivity and reliability - all with lower space and energy requirements.

As with all other motors in the AKM range, AKM1 models feature a particularly high power density, small inertia moments and low cogging, resulting in high efficiency that distinguishes them from conventional synchronous servo motors. With identical output, they are 30 to 50% more compact and 10 to 30% lighter than competitive options. This enables OEMs to build smaller, lighter and more energy efficient machines with improved heat dissipation, durability, availability and performance.
