Kollmorgen and ReliantHeart Team Up to Produce Energy Efficient, Wireless LVAD

Kollmorgen and ReliantHeart, an innovative supplier of advanced mechanical circulatory assist technology teamed up to produce an energy efficient motor stator designed to cut power consumption of the HeartAssist5® Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) by 50%.

Transcutaneous Energy Transfer (TET) wireless device

Energy efficiency is key to removing the driveline or external cables from an LVAD. Drivelines that exit the patient's body and attach to an external controller are the source of adverse events and infections.

This collaboration effort allows the LVAD to become a Transcutaneous Energy Transfer (TET) wireless device, with no wires exiting the patient's body, eliminating infections from cables of LVADs with no negative impact on the blood path of the pump.

I've used Kollmorgen components before, and I knew they manufactured quality motor and drives. I also knew of Kollmorgen servo motors but I was surprised to learn the Segway PT utilized them." said Mark Rogenski, Senior Electrical Engineer, IES Systems. Rogenski received his new Segway recently and was looking forward to cruising around his neighborhood.

"It was fun to give away a Segway PT knowing that it's driven by Kollmorgen motion technology." said Bill Sutton, Market Development Manager.

Kollmorgen's standard technology platforms are ideal for a wide variety of high-performance applications because they are easily customizable to meet the specific needs of customers, and the Segway i2 SE PT was no exception.
